What is your Idea? March celebrates Ideas, Creativity & Women

March, Ideas, Idea Month, Follow your dreams, entrepreneur, mompreneur, zeitgeist gifts

Julia here. Happy almost Spring! I love this time of the year as days become longer, the warmer weather makes me feel energized and it's so much fun exploring new ideas, trends or passions.

March is International Idea Month, which gives people the opportunity to express their ideas, find new ways to innovate, and have amazing new business ventures! We celebrate ideas internationally because all great companies started from simple ideas - look at Apple, Google, Amazon and Walt Disney World. Those incredible entrepreneurs wouldn’t have made those spectacular companies if they didn’t have the idea!

As you may know, Zeitgeist Gifts became what it is today because of a few ideas! One main one was bringing some of my German heritage over to the United States, and giving people something that is different, unique, contemporary and fun. Zeitgeist Gifts brings that idea to life, as we now carry products from all over the world that celebrate modern lifestyles and innovation. At the same time, I see my business as an evolution. Our time is busy, ever-changing, and you need to be able to adapt quickly. This also reflects my idea of Zeitgeist. The product mix we had at the beginning is different from what we offer today. Today is surely different from what I might have next year.

I want to encourage you to get inspired by trends, explore new ideas, and translate those in your own personal style. Be creative! Spring is a perfect time to declutter, to refresh your home, and with just a few accents, create a new look and feel. I love color contrasted with simple white or black.

Find some unique accessories that relate to you or your passion for something. One of our favorite products is ‘The Line’, which is a black metal wall art featuring the skyline of New York, San Francisco, Chicago or Washington. Perfect for city lovers and travelers – a cool accent for your home. Or if you’re looking for something unique for the office, our Flip Vases are a great way to spruce up your desk with some beautiful spring flowers or greens!

Think about creating new spaces – about multifunction. Ikea always inspires me with their simplicity and new ideas to use space differently. Foldable tables, cubes, chairs that turn into beds fit perfect in our time and adapt quickly to new ways of living, working or lounging. Perfect in urban areas where you have limited space! Simply brainstorm how a room can be used differently or how it can be more fun or serve your needs. Some design trends this year are dark tones, accenting with brass, and keeping it simple with black and white. Use these trends to make some updates to your living room, or find some new wall decor that can add a little something different to your room! Keeping with the trend of black and white, change up your comforter in the bedroom or paint your bedroom white and add black decor.

Anyway, March is also a month that celebrates Women with International Women's Day. It’s annually held on March 8 to celebrate women's achievements throughout history and across nations. It is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women's Rights and International Peace. I am proud to be a mom, woman entrepreneur and thrilled about the current movements that focuses on women rights, fairness, equal opportunity and respect. Therefore I like to encourage more women to follow their dreams, explore new ideas, be confident and make things happen.

Enjoy March & Happy Spring,

xoxo Julia

Great Ideas to Get Ready for Spring!

spring, spring tips, detox, gardening, reorganize home, ready for spring, spring walk, zeitgeist gifts

Ah..! The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and the smell of fresh grass and flowers are in the air - it’s getting to be springtime! Months of cold and frigid air can make anyone, even a winter enthusiast, get cabin fever. This time of year, we find our homes getting stuffy and cluttered, which makes the prospect of getting outdoors and enjoying the fresh air even more tempting!

What better way to prepare for spring then to do a much needed cleanse both inside your home and for your body! Being cooped up inside has started to take its toll, get ready for warmer temperatures and cleaner homes with Zeitgeist Gift’s tips and tricks for a successful spring cleaning!

Spring Detox

Spring cleaning isn’t only reserved for your home, start helping your body cleanse from winter by adding fresh fruits and veggies to the water you drink. Not only will this help you drink more water by adding subtle, fresh flavors, but you can help your body in other ways by adding various ingredients such as lemon and ginger or cayenne pepper for a bit of a kick!

Lemon and ginger tea is a great way to calm your stomach and help with digestion. To make it simply bring a small pot of water (roughly 2 cups) to boil over the stove and reduce heat to simmer. Next, chop up thin slices of ginger root, and 2-3 lemon slices. Add the lemon and ginger to the water and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Pour the tea and its components into a mug or strain to separate the tea from the lemon and ginger.  The tea is calming, easy to make, and great for your gut!

Alternatively, use chilled water and add a few slices of lemon and two teaspoons of cayenne pepper. Mix it up in a mason jar or water bottle and refrigerate overnight. The benefits are very similar to the warm ginger tea, however the lemon cayenne mix is best served cold, and easy to take with you as you run errands throughout the day!

Spring temperatures can be all over the place. One day it might be snowing, and the next can bring on a heat wave! On those warmer days, introduce yourself back into nature and take walks with the family. Breathing in the fresh air and being outside can help your energy levels, plus - exercising with the family is a great step in encouraging active habits in yourself and your kids (not to mention, it’s fun, too!) Head over to a local nature preserve, park, or simply take a walk around your neighborhood!

Declutter

We get it. The last thing on your list is decluttering the house. Make organizational tasks less overwhelming by creating a checklist the whole family can participate in! Divide decluttering to-dos into separate, smaller lists among your family members so as not to overwhelm one person. Even simple tasks like throwing out old magazines, tossing old jewelry, or cleaning out your email inbox can help refresh and renew your home. Get going with these tips for decluttering and refreshing each room of your house!

Bathroom

Start with the medicine cabinet and/or vanity: We live such busy lives, it’s easy to just toss new medications or floss packages behind the mirror or inside the drawers and not clear out the empty containers. Take an hour one day and empty out the drawers and shelves in your vanity onto the floor of the bathroom. With a garbage bag on hand, throw away anything you don’t need or haven’t used in months. Don’t forget to go through your makeup bag! Not only do many products have an expiration date, but clearing out your cosmetics can help with easing your morning routine. Rather than digging through a bag of unnecessary products you never use, determine which products you use on the regular, and either discard - or set aside the products you use sparingly. Repeat this same process in your shower area by clearing out old shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.

Kitchen

We all have them, that food wrapped up in foil in your freezer from last year that you forgot about…Clear out your fridge and freezer by tossing old jars of condiments, juices, and frozen food that you never used. Check mason jars or tupperware containers to make sure the food is still good. It helps to label jars with dates so you know when to use them by. Check out our sticky home made tape labels. These labels make it easy to differentiate goods in your fridge and freezer, and can help you stay organized and clutter free.

Bedroom

Spring is a perfect time to donate clothes you and your family don’t wear anymore, have grown out of, or don’t need. Similarly to cleaning the refrigerator or medicine cabinet, take everything out of your drawers and closet and separate into piles of what you wear most regardless of the season, seasonal piles, and clothes you don’t wear anymore. Toss unused clothes into bags and donate to thrift stores, or bring to consignment stores who pay for your lightly worn clothes for cash!

Living Room

When was the last time you rearranged your furniture? Give your living room the spring face-lift it deserves by getting the whole family involved in re-designing your space. You don’t need to hire an interior designer to give your living room a fresh look. Have the
kids draw out their plans for how they’d like to rearrange the furniture and vote as a family on your favorite design! Take trips to stores like Ikea and Target for new artwork, frames, mirrors, and other affordable pieces to help give your living room a new look. For a chic and fresh addition to your space, add a plant to our Elegant Audrey flower pot. Its bold colors and modern design work well to brighten any space! Our bird wine stopper gets you ready for spring!

Outdoors

If the snow is melted where you are, break out the rake and start clearing out any dead leaves you may have missed in the fall from your lawn or green space. There’s no better time than spring to start weeding out your garden and getting the grass ready for sunlight! Take a family trip to the local greenhouse or gardening store to decide which plants or herbs you’d like to grow this year. Our adorable porcelain plant labels will help you keep track of where your seedlings are as they grow! Plus, they’re durable and reusable year after year.

Keeping it Up

Sometime’s it can be hard to maintain organizational habits throughout the entire year. Start small and slowly add on organizational tasks to form habits so that next year, spring cleaning doesn’t have to feel so daunting! Most importantly, have fun. Cleaning doesn’t always have to be a drag. You can play some music or audio books while you’re cleaning, or reward yourself and the family with a small day trip or everyone’s favorite meal once the tasks are done. Spring is all about new beginnings, and even the tiniest changes can help!

Happy Spring Cleaning!

6 Easy Ways to Give Back this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 2017, give back, thankful, be grateful, appreciation, thanks, thank you, family, gratitude, thankfulness, thanksgiving idea, zeitgeist gifts

Thanksgiving is a special holiday in the United States. It brings families together, reminds us of gratitude, and ends with a festive meal. It allows us to remember our ancestors and how the holiday began, officially in 1941, but has been a tradition throughout the world for many years. I try every single day to be grateful for what this life has given me, but especially on Thanksgiving, it gives you the opportunity to hear about other people’s gratitudes, and what they give thanks for.

Every year, it’s easy to be thankful for what you have, but did you ever think about how you can take this holiday as an opportunity to give back? It’s important to remember those less fortunate, and try to find ways to volunteer or give your time this holiday season.

1. Find a Charity and Donate!

Whatever it is that you care deeply about, find an organization that supports your interests and donate your money and/or time. One organization that I personally care for is a local one called the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA). This nonprofit is ran solely on donations and they aim to protect animals. Whether it be saving animals from abuse, enforcing animal cruelty laws or nurturing animals back to health for adoption, this organization is one that I find extremely important to me and my family. Our family adopted our cat from them, and we continuously support them each year! Find a nonprofit like MCSPCA near you, and see how you can help!

2. Send a Note or Compliment to Someone

Discover stories of people who are doing good in the world, and send them some love thanking them for their positive contributions to the world. Send a gift box to someone you love and are thankful for. Add our Thank you candles to give them something that has inspiring words and adds a fun scent! Find a positive person in your neighborhood or community and bake them a pie along with a handwritten letter! Sending a note/gift and giving someone a compliment is good karma and is an easy way to give thanks!

3. Start your own Food Drive or Donate to One

Whether big or small, donating non perishables to those in need is not only a good way to give back, it can single-handedly save lives. See if your child’s school is doing a food drive, find a local food drive organization in your community, start your own food drive in the neighborhood. Maybe raise a contest and have a prize to whomever raises the most food! For those of you who have so much to be grateful for, it goes along way to give thanks and give back to those less fortunate.

4. Support a Thanksgiving 5k Fun Run

Each year across America, this holiday brings many different fun runs that support various nonprofits in your community. Use Running in the USA to find out what is happening near you! Donate to the cause and have a fun and active event before eating your weight later in the day! Remember, being active is another way to give thanks to the body you were given. It’s also very important to stay active during the cold season, as many food-heavy holidays are coming up and the weather may make you feel a little dreary. Supporting various runs and charities in your community helps keep you active, gives thanks, and donates to wonderful causes!

5. Pay it Forward

Whether you’ve been blessed monetarily or are in the mood to give back. Make a microloan to a student or small business in a developing country. There is an amazing organization called Kiva that facilitates these types of donations. You can invest in a small business or a school in an underdeveloped country and the recipient will pay you back in small increments. Once fully paid up, you can take your money back or donate it again to another cause. Continuously donate forever and help change lives!

6. Treat Someone in Need

Many people ignore the homeless on the street every single day. Many of these people have real stories about how they got to where they are, and can be very interesting to listen to! During the holiday season, give a meal to someone on the street or invite them out to eat with you. Hear their story and broaden your horizon or biased you have about the homeless community. Donate to organizations or nonprofits that help shelter and feed those less fortunate. Give back!

While this time of year brings many joyous moments together, remember that not everyone is as lucky as you. Remember to not only give thanks, but give back as well. Thanksgiving can sometimes be misconstrued as a time to be gluttonous and greedy. Fight those biases and find ways to put other people before yourself. It will undeniably have positive effects on your mood, moral and holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving,
xoxo Julia
