Veterans Day gives all Americans a special opportunity to pay tribute to all those men and women who throughout our history, have left their homes and loved ones to serve their country.
With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, it’s undeniably a very important holiday to learn about and celebrate. One question that is very common regarding Veteran’s Day is how does one celebrate it if you’ve never served in the military?
Let’s start with the brief history and how it came about. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. World War I finally came to an end in 1918, one of the most tragic periods in Western Europe’s history. Many lives were lost fighting and sacrificing for our country, and ever since the end of the war, Veterans Day was created! November 11 became a national holiday to commemorate the loss of lives and remembrance of our many ally victories during the time. Nowadays, Veteran’s Day gives us an opportunity to show our respects for those currently in our military and celebrate what they’re doing for us.
We at Zeitgeist Gifts are all about the ‘now’, the spirit of our time. How relevant do you think it is today? What do young people feel?
We think it’s important to educate and bring awareness to what is means to serve. Teach your children some US history, about what wars were fought, how many people died fighting for America, and what you can do to support veterans. Find some literature that explains what bravery means to a soldier, and learn more deeply about the sacrifice people have made.
There are many ways to get involved and show your support for veterans. Find and donate to organizations that support veterans after war. Volunteering your time this Veterans Day can be an amazing event for you and your family. Visit wounded veterans in the hospital or create a care package to give to soldiers who are still fighting! No matter big or small, a veteran will appreciate any sort of recognition on this or any day. At Zeitgeist Gifts, we have a wide range of American-made toiletries that would be perfect for soldiers abroad! We carry a full line of Duke Cannon soaps, grooming kits and other skin care goodies that can make a care package even more special! And Duke Cannon itself supports veterans with their products! Or maybe one of our unique candles with a hard-warming Thank you message?
Find online communities that give their support and care to veterans. People who have fought for our freedoms sometimes live with disorders after war, like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Living with these ailments can cause a great deal of strain for men and women who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. Sometimes, all someone needs is a person to listen to them and talk to, share their stores and get support. Volunteer your time to give a disabled veteran a ride or find other ways to help veterans on the Disabled American Veterans Charity! (www.dav.org) You can help those in need with simple gestures that go a long way.
There are countless amounts of ways you can make an impact this Veteran’s Day. Do some research, find out what activities are going on in your city, or start a charity of your own! Get a group of family members/friends together to visit your local hospital, or start a donation charity in your child’s school. All in all, be grateful on this day, and everyday. Remember that the men and women who fight for our country have left their families to protect yours.
There are such simple ways to give back on this holiday, you and your family can definitely do it too!
