Each year we have the honor of celebrating our country’s birthday! All the way back in 1776, our founding fathers started signing the Declaration of Independence! This declaration helped us break free and become an independent nation, that is now filled with opportunities, a variety of culture and a fun holiday that celebrates our freedom, country and summer!
The Fourth of July is the perfect holiday for many reasons, one being the time of year we celebrate it! It’s right in the middle of summer, and almost always beautiful weather! But this year, how can we make this holiday different from all the other years?
Get outside & be active!
There are so many different activities, events going on over the Fourth of July holiday, start looking now! In your city, see what festivals are going on and check if there are any fun-runs too! Don’t forget that the holidays are always heavy on eating, so try to find festivals to attend for walking and 5k runs before you grill out and eat the rest of the weekend! There is an amazing app that you can download called Meetup, where you can search for meetup groups based on your interests! It’s a great way to meet people if you’re new to a city or find some people that share your common interests.
Have an amazing cookout with your loved ones
Grilling out is a 4th of July essential. Gathering a group of your friends, family, neighbors and cooking your favorite food, chilling out by the pool and drinking some beers is one of the best ways to celebrate the holiday! At Zeitgeist gifts, we have an amazing selection of BBQ and summer products, from unique corn holders and drink coasters, to frisbees and cute pool bags! Make this year’s Fourth one to remember with your cool new gifts from Zeitgeist!
Invite your closest friends or family and make a weekend out of it! Find what campsites are near your city and make a small drive for a weekend filled with fun, sun, grilling out and quality time with those you love! Camping is a wonderful way to get out of the crazy city and enjoy nature. Make it even more special with some of our outdoor products that are perfect for bringing camping. Remember that spending a lot of time outdoors puts you at risk for sunburn. There is currently an app out there called Wolfram Sun Exposure that actually calculates how long your skin can handle the sun before burning based on your personal skin type, if you used sunscreen, and your location!
Show your patriotism
Find your local parade and attend, see what you can do to volunteer during your city’s festival and don’t forget to hang your flag! Be proud of your traditions, your country and how far it has come. Almost every city has a parade and a festival that goes along with it - ending in fireworks. Finding volunteer opportunities is a wonderful way to give back, meet new people, and be a good example to your children!
Make your own ice cream - kick the can!
Making ice cream is a perfect outdoor activity for your children, and it actually turns out great! All you need for this recipe is the following:
One large metal coffee can
One small metal coffee can that can fit inside the large one
1 cup whipping cream
½ teaspoon of vanilla
½ cup sugar
1 cup of milk
Basically, all you do for this simple recipe is add all the ingredients into the small coffee tin, and seal it with duct tape. Then place the small tin into the large tin and surrounding the small tin with ice and rock salt. Seal the large tin and begin kicking the can! After about 20-30 minutes and a couple times of refilling the ice and rock salt, put in the freezer for 20 minutes before serving! It’s delicious and fun!
Make root beer floats!
One of the most American treats, make root beer floats for your family! Pick up a quart or half gallon of vanilla custard/ice cream from your local ice cream shop and buy some A&W root beer! Place two scoops of ice cream into your cup and fill the rest with root beer! It’s an easy and unique treat that the kids and adults will enjoy!
Create your own firework show
Find your local firework shop and load up on fireworks! Create your own show in your yard that night! Note: Make sure you check your laws and regulations regarding fireworks in your neighborhood before spending any money!
Hi Guys, Julia here, happy October - a month that brings beautiful fall days, lots of pumpkins and Halloween, but is also very much about Breast cancer awareness.
Think Pink! We at Zeitgeist Gifts consider it important to live healthy, be informed and care for people and communities. So we thought that making a difference and contributing something to support women that are currently battling breast cancer was very important! We came up with a great giveaway as a unique gift and decided to donate 10% of our October proceeds to Breast Cancer Action, a US cancer charity. Please check out our Facebook page for more details and follow us there.
We feel it’s absolutely essential to learn about how and why this campaign was created, and what you can do to get involved! The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was started in October of 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries, whose aim was to promote mammograms as the main way to prevent breast cancer. As time passed, Evelyn Lauder from Estee Lauder began The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993 and started using the pink ribbon to symbolize the campaign and movement toward awareness and prevention. Other foundations like the popular Susan G Komen also handed out ribbons at their famous races for breast cancer survivors.
Pink! Do you actually know why this color was picked? Well, we don't have a definite answer but think this comes close: “Pink is the quintessential female color,” says Margaret Welch, director of the Color Association of the United States. “The profile on pink is playful, life-affirming. We have studies as to its calming effect; it’s quieting effect, its lessening of stress. [Pastel pink] is a shade known to be health-giving; that’s why we have expressions like ‘in the pink.’ You can’t say a bad thing about it. ”Pink is, in other words, everything cancer notably is not.
The pink ribbon has been a symbol for breast cancer since the early 90’s, and as time has passed and more people have been diagnosed and survived the disease, the big foundations were prosecuted for not having done much for the actual cause. One group of brave women who were all suffering with breast cancer, started their own foundation, Breast Cancer Action, which they believe addresses the main areas of breast cancer awareness: Prevention & treatment, root causes, and the pink ribbon.
The symbol of the pink ribbon has taken over the American culture, from billboards to commercials to products, and has had an unforeseeable positive impact on the stigma around breast cancer. This disease used to be something that was a secret and difficult to talk about. But as time goes on, many breast cancer foundations have found a way to come together and have the topic of breast cancer be a shared conversation, which has helped those cope with the disease and allow people to know they’re not alone.
Awareness is one of the easiest ways to get the conversation going and help those in need. You can find information anywhere these days, and it can sometimes be overwhelming. Make sure you take the time this month to research breast cancer causes, treatments, and ethical foundations that you can donate to! And why not show your support and others that you care! Decorate your door, porch or mailbox with pink ribbons, flowers or stickers. Many of the charities provide items that can be used for many awareness initiatives. Participate in runs, games or other activities that help raise funds for more cancer research. Our son’s soccer coach, for example, set up a game moms against son where everybody is wearing pink as a sign of support. Can’t wait!
If you have a loved one who is suffering with breast cancer, show some extra support this month and make sure they know that you care. As already mentioned, we have collaborated with a business in California who creates unique handmade soy candles that are beautifully scented and carry lovely messages such as Be Strong & Courageous, Thinking of You, You Got This and many others. The entire collection can be found here. A little message and small gesture can really go a long way. Find out what fun runs, events or other volunteer opportunities are going on in your community, and talk to someone who has breast cancer. Put yourself in their position and see what you can do to comfort those in need. Let’s all join together as one and create more awareness around breast cancer!
Julia here. As most of you know, I am from Germany, and today I am really pleased to introduce a really cool product from my hometown Berlin! If you've never heard of Tyvek before, you're in for a treat! If you have heard of this durable material that is used to wrap houses, you're also in for a surprise! The German company I Like Paper has translated their creative vision and craftsmanship into a cool and unique product – the Pappwatch, a lightweight watch made of Tyvek.
I Like Paper is a home grown company in Kreuzberg, Berlin, known for his arty flair, diverse mix of people, and still has some of the old ‘typical Berlin’ neighborhoods before the East became fashionable. Imagine an old stone building with high ceilings and a court inside. This is the home of I Like Paper, where all products are still handmade, piece by piece. In fact, I visited the company in March this year and have seen how this handmade process is completed - it's pretty impressive!
The creative bunch collaborates with various international designers, illustrators and artists, allowing them to offer more than 300 different styles of watches and small accessories. They employ people from all different lifestyles - from students to fashion designers, all working together to come up with new creations that fit perfectly in today’s modern lifestyle.
In our fast paced world, people are constantly looking for new and innovative accessories that match their style and personality. These watches are great for on the go, and the affordable design allows you to have multiple watches to meet your everyday fashion needs! Match your Pappwatch to your outfit, your bag, or your mood - there's something here for everyone!
So how exactly is this watch created and what materials do they use? You always see the Tyvek logo when under construction houses are wrapped for better insulation, right? This same material is also amazing for printing! It is actually a plastic made from synthetic paper that can be recycled up to five times, making it an ideal material to use for those who are environmentally conscious. Due to its construction, it is both tear-resistant as well as water repellent, making it a great choice for users who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle or who are a little bit rougher with their belongings, such as children. However, please note that these watches are water resistant but not waterproof….so don’t jump in the pool or leave it on under the shower ;)
After the designs are printed on the Tyvek material, they are then coated with a laminate material that will protect the designs and the color, and sealed to create your very fashionable Pappwatch! This also allows the watch to last for years to come, as they are quite flexible and durable! These fun products are the perfect way to celebrate birthdays, holidays, or just a little treat for a loved one. The affordable and hand made designs are sure to put a smile on your face or the one you surprise with this unique gift. Perfect for moms, dads, children, and even grandparents.
