Depending on your location, September can be a fairly warm/summery month or start cooling off for winter. Either way, we at Zeitgeist Gifts want to give you ideas of how to enjoy this month with school starting, weather changing, and hectic schedules!

Make Healthy Choices & Stay Active!

It seems that when the winter comes closer and holidays begin, people get a little lazy with their health/wellness goals and their motivation. Don’t let the cold weather discourage you! Stay active, always find healthy choices in your area, and keep your goals up-to-date. Sign your kids up for fall sports like cross-country, soccer or indoor swimming. Keep them moving, and yourself as well! Bring your kids to the park to fly some of our unique kites during the chilly windy days. Look for meet ups in the area that moms can do together. Whether it be a walking club, crafts club or wellness group! Finding other like-minded individuals to help you with your goals is essential if you want to be successful. Set time aside each week for “personal development”. Look at your current goals and the activities you do everyday, update and repeat!

Get Organized but Have Fun!

With all the busy fall activities, it’s important to keep your schedule with a routine that is seamless! There is nothing worse than a hectic schedule with no preparation. If you have busy events, athletic games, appointments and work coming up, make sure you’re organized with a personal planner or one of the amazing apps such as Cozi or OurHome. Have a day designated to plan for the week, Sunday usually works best, and run with it! Align your schedule, have a family meeting to discuss the week, do healthy meal prep for school lunches and dinners!

Activities in your city! Every city, no matter if it’s big or small, has events going on throughout the year. Search for your city and see if there are any drive-in movies being played, fall activities being held near your downtown, or fun runs to do with the family. Visit Running in the USA for a list of all the running events in your area! You can search by city, distance and date. It’s a great way to stay active and have fitness goals once the weather starts getting cooler.

Dress for Weather Changes & Be Safe!

When the weather changes, it’s common for sicknesses to start and spread, so remember to wear enough clothes on cooler days outside and take vitamin C and vitamin D. Remember, with weather changing and days getting shorter, it’s essential to keep our families safe! Check out our amazing line of athletic safety accessories to help light the way to a safe workout, to school or simply to work!

Lastly, September is of course Apple Season!

Apples, apples, apples! From visiting orchards, to baking apples pies, to creating little apple creatures, the fun is guaranteed! Not only are fall flavors bursting with deliciousness-- they also provide plenty of ideas for family time. Find local orchards where you can pick your own apples, pumpkins, or berries. Orchards often also include more than fruit-picking too-- from bonfires to hayrides to maple-syrup-sampling. To make the adventure last, take your freshly picked apples and turn them into an afternoon baking extravaganza! A few modern twists on apple pie include apple pie barsapple pancakes with maple walnuts, or this fresher, healthier version of McDonald’s Apple Pie.

Overall, make this September a healthy, structured and successful one! Enjoy the beautiful weather while you still can and keep your children active to boost their metabolisms, which in turn helps with development and learning abilities. Don’t forget to take care of yourself as well! Moms need all the help they can get and finding ways to reduce stress and stay on top of things, so make sure you’re chiselling out time during your week to focus on YOU!

Happy Fall!
Cheers Julia

The Back-to-School Groove! Get Ready!

August is rolling in on heat waves-- at least here in the US!--and along with it come dreams of school-friend reunions, the blessed organization of a weekly schedule, and the coming crisp days of fall. So what can you do to make this transition seamless, grasping these last lazy, hazy days of summer while embracing the creative, productive school mood?

Ease into routines early to prepare for the school-day schedule

As you edge into a more regimented schedule, try to start each morning with a healthy breakfast. Well-rounded breakfasts don’t have to be time-intensive either. Smoothies, for example, are a quick, yummy treat to start off the day. Plus, homemade smoothies give you a chance to take advantage of the last months of fresh, sun-ripened summer fruits! Healthy whole-grain cereals are also a quick option, and older kids can even “prepare” such a breakfast themselves! Add some fun with our unique sipping spoons

Jumpstart your family’s motivation

As the responsibilities of school work draw near, consider ways to motivate your kids to be independent. They could even help with end-of-summer chores, depending on their age. Kids are often eager to prove their independence, and imagine how proud they will be (and you too!) when they have chopped summer vegetables, helped in the yard, or loaded the dishwasher. Praise them for contributing to the family meal by giving verbal encouragement, or even a few dollars. Independence and motivation go a long way, and you will reap the benefits throughout the entire school year. Keep the family inspired during this transition—our fun motivational cards can be used for many occasions (like a surprise tucked into a school lunch!) and will put a smile on their faces.

Get organized

Do your kids have summer assignments that have been collecting dust for the last two months? Get out those project sheets and begin! It’s easier to start these a few weeks before the first day of school, so that you can do a bit each day, lightening the burden for later.

If you have kids who are excited about their gadgets, use that to your advantage by suggesting some fun, organizational apps like the myHomework Student Planner, which allows students to input homework assignments and due dates so that prioritizing and reminding is automatic. Another fully-loaded app we love is Evernote. Whether you need a quick organization tool for your to-do list, or a heavy-duty helper to manage your back-to-school shopping receipts and memos, Evernote really makes it easy!

Make Back-to-School shopping a team effort

Just because it’s a shopping trip for school supplies doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Depending on your kids’ ages, you could hand over responsibility in small doses, like by making them prepare the list of required items, rather than you doing all of the work. This is a great opportunity to explain the differences between brands, and make them aware of cost, the value of their money, and the importance of understanding that hard work (like that vegetable-chopping or weed-pulling!) pays off.

To stay motivated while shopping, check the mundane items (pencils, reams of paper, binders) off the list first, and save the best for last! Reward patient kids by allowing them to pick out a couple of fun items to take back to school, like our “pen-cake” pencil case, or a video-game inspired lunchbox. And did you know that the kids are learning the metric system now, in addition to the American system? Dating all the way back to 1799, the metric system is the internationally established standard, so your kids will be smart in any corner of the world! Keep the learning going both at home and school with our fun wooden rulers, which are a toy and ruler in one. Even the little ones will enjoy them, and older kids can use them in the classroom.

Be an example: Take care of yourself!

The back-to-school weeks of August are a flurry of activity. Remember to take care of yourself mentally and physically to stay positive and productive! Though you might be spending more time indoors, try to maintain a regular workout schedule when you have time. Yoga and Pilates, for instance, are not only good for your body, but your mental and emotional peace as well! Staying centered in this busy time is a great way to model for your kids the importance of mindfulness and self-care.

Don’t forget to enjoy the last days of summer!

Finally, in the back-to-school frenzy, it’s easy to get excited about the future and forget to grasp those final days of summer vacation. Consider a spontaneous weekend trip with the family while schedules are still relaxed. Explore a local park, go out for ice cream, or try out a drive-in movie theater! At home, giggle with the kids while they decorate their arms with temporary tattoos, or bedazzle their bikes for school with our fun reflective stickers!

So make the most of the last sweet summer days, and get ready for the fun transition back to school. Being prepared before shopping, keeping it fun with personalized pieces, and remembering to breathe deep and stay positive will ensure that the whirlwind of beginning the school year is a breeze for your family!

Add Fun and Ease to Your Family’s Daily Routine

Fun Kids, Ease Routine, Less stress kids, family, new ideas

If your family is anything like mine, getting out the door on-time in the morning can be a challenge. With so many moving parts—breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth, packing lunch, planning ahead for the evening activities—routines are absolutely essential. We all live and breathe the Zeitgeist Lifestyle which means our family's schedules are tight. We thrive in a busy environment, but that doesn't mean the chaos is always fun. To keep the stress down and the boredom away, I try to take advantage of any tip or trick that will make my family's routine a little bit easier and fun! It helps everything run more smoothly, and makes those chores we hate but have to do (like packing lunch) much more bearable.

GOOD MORNING!

Kids mug, unique breakfast, fun mugs, lunch box, motivation cards, better routines

Ahh, that morning alarm clock. We know the sound all too well. Morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed and the day will stay wrong until you're back in bed, so make it count! Nothing gets you motivated and ready to greet the day like a healthy, hearty breakfast. One of the easiest nutritional breakfasts you can have is a smoothie, and as an added bonus, your kids will love them too. Let your kids help you make them or sneak in some protein-packed veggies like spinach and kale when they're not looking! The sweetness of the fruit you add will disguise the taste of the veggies. Sip them with these fun sipping spoons or pack them in to-go cups and take them with you. Our sipping spoons work great for cereal too!

Want some other ideas to sneak in a little fun in the morning? How about having your morning coffee or the kids' favorite drink in these silly nose mugs?  And if you dread packing school lunches as much as I do, make it more enjoyable with these distinctive and clever lunch boxes. They’re BPA free and dishwasher safe and come in unique designs. Want to ensure your children have a great day post-lunch as well? Slip these motivational cards into their lunch boxes to power them through the second half of the day. They'll know you're thinking of them and looking forward to seeing them at the end of the day. Plus, they work great on spouses too!

SCHOOL'S OUT!

ruler, metrics, homework fun, unique pencil case, building block soap, zeitgeist gifts

One of my favorite parts of the day is listening to my children excitedly fill me in on all that happened during their school day. From gym class, to recess, to the class clown's shenanigans, they're always excited to share their tales with me! Oftentimes, they're so excited though that getting them to do the most trivial task, like washing their hands before their after-school snack, is a challenge. We don't want to spread germs, and the last thing we need is a cold or flu bug making its way through the household. To make them excited to wash their hands (and to burn some of that excess energy), try this building block soap. The soap bars are Lego-inspired and can actually be stacked. Your kids will think they're just playing and you won't have to let the thoughts of the sticky monkey bars they hung from at recess haunt you in your dreams.

Later, when it's time to get some homework done, lessen the whines and complaints from your kids by introducing tools to make the homework more enjoyable like these fun rulers or pencil cases that look like a pancake or a sneaker. It’s true, homework-time still won't be the most thrilling part of their day, but whatever you can provide to motivate them to do their homework, will free up both their time and yours!

WIND DOWN…

lullaby, music box, bedtime kids, creative gift

When the homework's done and the day is reaching its close, allow yourself ample time to relax. This is the best part of the evening—after dinner’s been eaten and cleaned up, after swim lessons and ballet—when you're mentally preparing to start it all over again. Now’s the time for some quality family time without all the distractions. So cuddle up on the couch or in bed for a good bedtime story and allow yourself a little reprieve from the chaos of the day. If your youngins need help falling asleep, these cuddly music boxes will do the trick. Soft and plush like their favorite stuffed animal, they play a melodic lullaby when you pull the cord, helping your little ones drift off to sleep. They’ll be well-rested and ready for the next day, and you will too!

Embrace any and everything that will make the day-to-day tasks a little easier and a little more fun. Small changes can really help make your routines more efficient and your children will forever appreciate how you always made even the most trivial tasks feel like an adventure!
